Ryobi filled a gap in the 18V ONE+ lineup this month. The PCL428B is a cordless 3-1/4 inch hand planer, available now at Home Depot for $139 bare. It runs on any ONE+ battery you already own and replaces the older P611 series with an updated brushless motor and a refreshed blade system.

Specs at a Glance

  • Cutting width: 3-1/4″
  • Max cut depth: 5/64″ per pass
  • No-load speed: 14,000 RPM
  • Dust port: accepts 1-1/4″ or 1-7/8″ vac hose (dust bag included)
  • Double-edge reversible blades
  • Built-in kickstand and blade storage compartment
  • Battery: 18V ONE+ (bare tool, battery not included)
  • Warranty: 3 years

A kit version (PCL428K1) with a 4Ah battery and charger is coming soon. Right now, the $139 bare tool is the only way to buy it.

When It Makes Sense

A hand planer earns its spot for specific jobs: trimming a door that sticks after the house has settled, pulling a board to thickness before a glue-up, or cleaning up mill marks on rough lumber before finishing. At 5/64″ per pass, you’re making controlled cuts rather than hogging off material in a hurry.

Ryobi’s corded hand planer (around $60) still makes sense for heavy use or long sessions where runtime matters. The PCL428B is the better pick if you’re doing occasional trimming work and don’t want an extension cord in the way. ONE+ compatibility means no separate batteries to buy if you’re already in the system.

Where to Buy

The PCL428B is available now at Home Depot for $139 bare. Ryobi tools are exclusive to Home Depot, so that’s your only retail option. The PCL428K1 kit with battery and charger isn’t listed yet.
