Milwaukee just refreshed the M18 compact brushless drill for the first time in about five years. The 3601 (drill/driver) and 3602 (hammer drill) started shipping from Home Depot this week, alongside companion impact drivers (3650, 3651) in the same compact form factor.
Models and Specs
| Model | Type | Length | Weight | Torque | Max RPM | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3601-20 | Drill/Driver | 5.7″ | 2.3 lbs | 550 in-lbs | 1,700 | ~$139 at Home Depot |
| 3602-20 | Hammer Drill | 5.8″ | 2.3 lbs | 550 in-lbs | 1,700 | ~$149 bare |
Both use an all-metal gear case and 1/2″ metal chuck, which is an upgrade from the plastic chuck housing on the previous 2801 generation. Two speed settings: 0-450 and 0-1,700 RPM. Compatible with all M18 REDLITHIUM batteries.
What’s Different From the Previous Generation
The outgoing 2801 topped out at 500 in-lbs. The 3601 pushes that to 550. More practically, the metal chuck should hold bits more securely under vibration, which matters on overhead work and repeat-cycle fastening. The length stayed nearly the same at 5.7″ versus the 2801’s 5.8″, so it still fits in the same tight spots.
The 3602 hammer drill is also new to the compact tier. Milwaukee didn’t offer a hammer drill at this length in the previous compact brushless lineup, so tradespeople who needed percussive mode had to step up to the heavier FUEL line. The 3602 brings that capability into the 5.8″, 2.3-lb package.
Where It Fits
The M18 compact line sits between M12 (smaller, less torque) and the M18 FUEL drills (heavier, more power, higher price). For cabinet installs, trim work, decking, and general remodeling, the 3601 covers nearly everything at a sensible weight. The M18 FUEL makes sense when you’re driving long fasteners all day or need maximum torque in production framing.
