Makita Launches GDT04: Most Powerful XGT Impact Driver Yet at 2,040 In-Lbs

Makita has launched the GDT04, its most powerful impact driver ever on the 40V Max XGT platform. Reviewed in early February 2026 and now available, the GDT04 delivers 2,040 in-lbs of max torque — outpacing the previous top-of-line GDT01 by 90 in-lbs. If you’re working with heavy structural fasteners, large lag screws, or demanding production work, this is Makita’s answer.

What’s New with the GDT04

The headline number is 2,040 in-lbs of breakaway torque, but what makes this driver interesting is how it manages that power. Four speed modes let you dial in exactly what you need:

  • Mode 1: 0–1,200 RPM (precision/finish work)
  • Mode 2: 0–2,100 RPM
  • Mode 3: 0–3,000 RPM
  • Mode 4: 0–3,900 RPM (max power)

A digitally controlled tightening mode adds another layer of precision for fastening applications where consistency matters. The tool is water-resistant and measures just 5-3/8″ in length — compact for what it delivers. It runs on Makita’s 40V Max XGT batteries, which in the new 8Ah configuration use tabless Li-ion cell technology for reduced internal resistance and cooler operation under load.

Pricing and What’s in the Box

The GDT04Z bare tool is priced at around 34 at time of writing. Makita also announced a kit (GDT04D) at approximately 99 that includes two 2.5Ah XGT batteries, a charger, and a carry bag.

Makita also released a combo kit pairing the GDT04 with the GPH03 — its most powerful 40V hammer drill at 1,590 in-lbs — for those looking to build out an XGT toolkit from scratch. If you’re already on the XGT platform, adding this impact driver makes sense. If you’re new to XGT, a combo kit helps justify the platform investment.

Where It Fits in Makita’s Lineup

Makita runs two parallel professional cordless platforms: the long-established 18V LXT and the newer 40V Max XGT. The XGT line targets demanding applications where 18V tools hit their limits — heavy timber framing, structural steel, extended production use. The GDT04 sits at the top of the XGT impact driver lineup, positioned above the GDT01 for users who need every bit of available torque.

For context, most DIY-grade impact drivers top out around 1,500–1,800 in-lbs. At 2,040 in-lbs, the GDT04 is firmly in professional territory. It’s not a tool you need for hanging cabinet doors — but for driving 4″ structural screws through LVL beams all day, it’s in its element.

Should You Buy It?

If you’re already invested in the Makita XGT ecosystem, the GDT04 is a natural upgrade for high-torque work. If you’re comparing it against competitors, be aware that Milwaukee’s M18 FUEL High Torque Impact Driver and DeWalt’s 20V MAX XR also compete in this range — see our Best Cordless Impact Drivers 2026 guide for a full comparison.
