Makita just dropped a new commercial-grade walk-behind mower on its 40V max XGT platform, and the price lands squarely in the middle of the pro-tier market. The GML01 21-inch commercial mower ships in two kit configurations: $999 with two 4.0Ah batteries and rapid charger, or $1,299 with the 8.0Ah kit for larger properties. Bare tool is also available for shops already deep into XGT batteries.

Specs and Build

Under the deck, the GML01 is built like a contractor tool, not a homeowner special. Highlights from the spec sheet:

  • Deck: 22″ stamped steel, 21-inch blade, 16-gauge, 3-in-1 mulch / bag / side discharge
  • Height adjustment: Single-point lever, 1.25″ to 4″ in quarter-inch increments
  • Motor: Brushless, up to 2,800 RPM / 15,400 FPM blade tip speed
  • Battery: 2x 40V max XGT packs with auto-switching; up to ~1.2 acres per charge on the 8.0Ah kit
  • Drive: Rear-wheel self-propelled, 1-3 MPH variable speed
  • Weight: 68.1 lbs bare / 76.5 lbs with kitted batteries
  • Wheels: 9″ front and rear
  • Weather rating: IPX4 (jobsite rain and morning dew are fine)
  • Bag capacity: 2 bushels
  • Warranty: 3 years

Soft No-Load mode automatically pulls RPM down when the motor isn’t cutting, and a dedicated Noise Reduction mode keeps early-mower neighbors happy on residential routes.

How It Fits in the Commercial Mower Market

The GML01 lands at the same price tier as the EGO Commercial 21-inch and a few hundred dollars below the typical 36V/40V commercial entrants from Greenworks Pro and Stihl. Landscapers already running 40V XGT for trimmers, blowers, and chainsaws can now add a commercial-grade mower on the same batteries, which is the most compelling argument for existing XGT owners. Pros in other ecosystems should compare against the EGO Commercial 21-inch and Honda HRC-BE, both established in this tier. Our best battery riding mowers roundup covers the higher-end ride-on options if your accounts are bigger than a walk-behind can handle.

Makita is clearly building out a complete XGT outdoor lineup: the GML01 joins the 40V XGT grease gun (GPG01Z) and the 40V XGT edger (GEU01Z) as recent additions. Context on the broader cordless yard category is in our best cordless lawn mowers guide for the homeowner side, and the best OPE combo kit roundup pairs mowers with trimmers and blowers by platform.

Availability and Pricing

The Makita GML01Z (bare tool), GML01PM4 (4.0Ah kit), and GML01PT2 (8.0Ah kit) are shipping now through authorized Makita dealers. Pricing holds at $999 (4.0Ah kit) and $1,299 (8.0Ah kit) at launch. Check manufacturer specs and current pricing before purchasing, since dealer pricing varies and Amazon availability is still rolling out.
