FLEX FX1272 Hammer Drill: 1,500 In-Lbs, $299 Kit on Amazon

FLEX just rolled out the FX1272, the long-awaited second generation of its flagship 24V brushless hammer drill. The original FX1271 launched in 2021, so this update lands about five years later, and FLEX took the time to bump every meaningful spec. The kit ships with two 5.0Ah batteries, a 160W fast charger, and a hard case for $299 on Amazon.

Standard speed is 0-550 / 0-2,300 RPM with 0-8,800 / 0-36,800 BPM. Chuck is a 1/2 inch metal ratcheting unit. The new kickback control is the headline safety feature: a sensor detects bit bind and shuts the motor down before the drill yanks your wrist. The kit also includes FLEX’s 160W fast charger, which tops off a 5.0Ah pack noticeably faster than the older 90W unit that shipped with the FX1271.

How it performed in testing

Pro Tool Reviews put the FX1272 through four head-to-head tests against the FX1271, and the new model finished 23-26% faster across the board. That includes RSS screws, spade bit drilling, concrete (hammer mode), and self-feed bit work. The hammer mode in particular benefits from the 20% BPM bump.

At 5.8 lbs with a 5.0Ah pack, it’s middleweight for a 24V hammer drill. FLEX claims a 5-year warranty, though the review page also lists a “lifetime warranty w/registration” note worth verifying on FLEX’s site at checkout. In hand, the grip is similar to the FX1372A impact driver FLEX shipped earlier this summer, which is a good thing: the rubber overmold is comfortable for long framing runs and the trigger has a clean break.

Market positioning

The 24V cordless drill space is crowded, but FLEX has a unique lane. The brand is Amazon-exclusive in the U.S. after exiting Lowe’s in 2023, so you’re buying direct from the manufacturer. At $299 for a kit with two 5.0Ah batteries and a fast charger, it undercuts Milwaukee M18 FUEL hammer drill kits that typically run $349-$399 for similar battery configurations. The 1,500 in-lbs torque figure puts it above most 18V/20V MAX hammer drills and into M18 FUEL territory.

The trade-off is platform lock-in. Milwaukee M18 has the largest battery ecosystem on the market, DeWalt 20V MAX has wider retail availability, and Makita LXT has the longest track record. FLEX 24V is solid for what it is, but if you’re starting from scratch, cross-shop the kit pricing on all four before committing.

Where to get one: FLEX FX1272 kit on Amazon. The bare tool version hasn’t shown up in retail channels yet, and FLEX tends to lead with kits. Expect a bare tool version (FX1272-Z) at around $149-$179 once Amazon listings stabilize.

Bottom line

If you already run FLEX 24V batteries, this is a free upgrade decision. The kickback control alone is worth the swap from an older FX1271. If you’re cross-shopping, the kit pricing makes FLEX worth a serious look against Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Makita at the same tier. Just make sure the price gap covers whatever batteries and chargers you’d need to commit to a new platform.

Who should buy the FX1272

The FX1272 is built for tradespeople and serious DIYers already on or considering the FLEX 24V platform. The hammer drill mode is genuinely useful for masonry and concrete, so if you drill tapcons into block, drive sleeve anchors, or just need to put a few holes in concrete for mounting, the new 48,000 BPM turbo mode is a meaningful upgrade. The kickback control sensor is the more important safety win. Bind-up on a 1/2 inch chuck can rip a wrist in a hurry, especially in hammer mode.

Casual DIYers who only need a drill for occasional projects will get more out of a cheaper 18V or 20V MAX platform. FLEX 24V is a real pro-tier ecosystem, and you only get value out of it if you actually use the batteries across multiple tools. FLEX sells miter saws, grinders, cut-off saws, impact drivers, and other 24V tools that all share the same batteries.
