Ryobi unveiled a new tool category at a Home Depot media event this week: a slim cordless precision screwdriver the brand is calling Microtech. ToolGuyd got a hands-on first look, and the form factor is unlike anything Ryobi has shipped before.
Built around a 4mm hex bit holder that takes “micro” form-factor screwdriver bits, the Microtech pairs the small bit drive with two speed settings and a forward/reverse switch positioned near the front of the tool. Slim enough to nest inside its own bit case for storage, the body also integrates an LED flashlight at the front that toggles on even when the speed dial is set to zero.
What We Know About the Tool
Ryobi has not yet published a full spec sheet, model number, or price. What we can confirm from the hands-on coverage:
- USB-charged built-in battery (no swappable pack)
- 4mm hex bit holder for micro screwdriver bits
- Two speed settings
- Direction switch near the front for one-handed operation
- Front-facing LED work light that works at the zero-speed setting
- Slim profile that stores inside its own bit case
- Unveiled at a Home Depot media event, so Home Depot launch is the expected retail channel
Why This Matters
Precision cordless screwdrivers have mostly lived in the Makita and Bosch camps for years, with the HOTO and Wera electric screwdrivers occupying the micro-form-factor niche as third-party options. A Ryobi entry into this space, sold through Home Depot under the ONE+ umbrella, puts a mainstream DIY-friendly option into a category that has stayed small and enthusiast-focused.
If Ryobi positions the Microtech under the existing 18V ONE+ platform, even as a USB-charged standalone tool, it signals the brand is testing new form factors that don’t depend on the traditional battery-and-charger model. A Ryobi rep told ToolGuyd the official announcement is coming soon, which usually means weeks rather than months.
When and Where It Lands
No firm launch date, MSRP, or confirmed SKU has been published by Ryobi as of this writing. The tool was shown at a Home Depot media event, so a Home Depot exclusive launch is the most likely path. We will update this post when Ryobi publishes specs and pricing.
