Makita released two 5-inch flathead angle grinders on May 5 for its 40V XGT platform: the GAG15Z (slide switch) and GAG16Z (paddle switch). The flathead design isn’t a cosmetic choice — it’s a direct response to a real job-site constraint.
Why Flathead Matters
Standard angle grinders have a gearhead that protrudes above the disc plane, which creates clearance problems in tight spots: behind pipe flanges, inside structural steel channels, flush against a wall surface. Makita’s flathead design positions the gearhead at a 39° angle — 45% more clearance than a conventional grinder, per Makita. For HVAC rough-in, structural welding prep, or tile work in framed-in spaces, that gap is the difference between reaching the material and not.

Active Feedback-Sensing Technology cuts power if the tool detects a sudden rotation — the kind of kickback that’s worse when your hands are cramped into a tight corner. The 5-speed variable control lets you drop RPM for surface prep work without reaching for a different tool.
How It Stacks Up
Milwaukee’s M18 FUEL flathead grinders use a 4-1/2-inch disc. DeWalt has paddle-switch options in compact profiles but doesn’t offer a true flathead geometry. The Makita XGT versions step up to a 5-inch disc — more material removal per pass — while staying on the 40V platform that also powers Makita’s GPH03 hammer drill and GAG13Z conventional grinder.
