DeWalt quietly added two compact mechanics sets and they are already in stock on Amazon. The 1/4-inch set is $34, the 3/8-inch set runs about $60. Both are 50 pieces. No press release, they just showed up.

That price is the story. A 50-piece 1/4-inch drive set for $34 costs less than most single ratchets from the tool truck brands. For a road box or a second garage, buy it without thinking too hard.

What is in each set

DeWalt publishes the same feature list for both models. Only the drive size and ratchet differ.

The 1/4-inch set packs a compact ratchet, spinner handle, two extensions, and a mix of 6-point sockets and hex bits into a molded case. DeWalt says the ratchet head is 20% thinner than standard, which is the point: it reaches fasteners a full-size ratchet cannot.

The 3/8-inch set carries the same 50 pieces but swaps in a much larger ratchet. Both use a 72-tooth mechanism with a 5-degree arc swing. Workable for tight spots, though not the 90-tooth action premium ratchets have.

How it compares to what DeWalt already sells

DeWalt still sells its older ToughCase sets, including a 25-piece version with a slimmer case and narrower assortment. The new sets bring more mixed contents and a lower price per piece.

The 108-piece DWMT73801 set, combining 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch drive, runs about $73. That is roughly 68 cents a piece. The new 1/4-inch set at $34 also lands near 68 cents a piece. Same value, but the bigger kit covers both drive sizes in one box.

Where the small sets win is portability. A 108-piece set is a heavy box that lives on a shelf. The 50-piece 1/4-inch set fits in a bag.

Should you buy one

The 1/4-inch set is the better value. At $34 you get a compact 72-tooth ratchet, sockets, hex bits, and a case, and the low-profile head solves a real problem. If you already own a full 1/4-inch drive set, this is redundant. If you do not, it is an easy entry point.

The 3/8-inch set is a harder call near $60, since larger 3/8-inch sets from Craftsman sit in that range. Check the piece breakdown first, because 50 pieces goes fast once you split SAE and metric. DeWalt does not publish the exact sizes on the listing, so confirm what you need is covered.
