Pencil-style impact drivers used to be the tool you settled for when you had no room for a full-size driver. Makita just refreshed theirs, and the math on whether it’s worth $294 is worth a look.

The Makita TD023DSE is a new 7.2V cordless impact driver kit that replaces the long-running TD022DSE. It’s a pen-shaped driver built for tight quarters: panel covers, junction boxes, appliance service, machine work. Max torque is 220 in-lbs with a variable-speed trigger reaching 2,450 RPM.

The body has a two-position design. You can angle the grip for ergonomic hold or straighten it out for inline driving.

Same Specs, New Body

Here’s the honest read: torque and speed are essentially identical to the outgoing TD022DSE. The new model is a touch heavier but a bit more compact, and the kit now ships with a hard-shell case instead of a bag. If you already own a TD022DSE, there’s no performance reason to upgrade.

Where this tool earns its keep is trigger control. Electricians, HVAC techs, and service techs keep these in the bag for delicate fastening where an 18V driver would either strip the screw or launch it across the room. The 1.3 lb weight means it works all day above your head without complaint.

The Price Problem

The kit lists at $294, which is steep for a 7.2V tool. Commenters on the announcement quickly noted the same kit sells in Japan for roughly $110 to $150, and budget brands sell mini impact drivers for under $60.

Makita is pricing for the tradesman who needs the form factor and trigger finesse, not the value shopper.

If that’s not you, the outgoing TD022DSE kit is still available on Amazon for around $266 and performs the same fastening work.

There’s also no torque clutch, which is normal for an impact driver but worth knowing if you’re coming from a screwdriver-style tool.

Who Should Buy It

  • Service techs who do precision fastening daily and want the newest body design
  • Anyone with existing 7.2V Makita CXT batteries looking to add the updated driver

And one honest caveat for the other camp:

  • DIYers should probably look at the outgoing model or a budget mini driver instead

For most readers, this is a watch-and-wait release. We expect the TD023DSE price to settle below list once the launch window passes, and the TD022DSE remains a solid choice in the meantime.
