Kobalt finally has tabless batteries. Lowe’s new TXP line for the 24V Max platform comes in 4Ah and 8Ah sizes, and both pack tabless Li-ion cells, the same construction Ryobi has been shipping on its EDGE batteries since early 2024.
It closes an obvious gap. DeWalt, Makita, Bosch, Craftsman, and Ryobi have all moved to tabless cell construction over the past two years, and Kobalt’s 24V platform was the holdout. Until now, its top-end packs were the Ultimate Output batteries built on conventional tabbed cells.
What TXP Gets You
- 4Ah pack: up to 1,200 watts of output, $99
- 8Ah pack: up to 2,400 watts of output, $159
- Tabless Li-ion cells in both sizes
- Lowe’s claims the longest runtime of any Kobalt 24V battery for both packs
- Faster charging supported, no new charger announced yet
The wattage figures are burst output, not continuous. Tabless cells shine under heavy load, so expect the biggest difference on high-drain tools like circular saws, grinders, and hammer drills. A light-duty tool or a worklight won’t show much runtime gap between TXP and the old Ultimate Output packs.
Lowe’s is clearing out the previous generation in the meantime. The outgoing Ultimate Output 4Ah is listed around $35 and the 8Ah around $79 at the time of writing. If you’re a Kobalt 24V owner who wants cheap capacity and you don’t need the extra punch, the clearance packs are a better deal per amp-hour. Prices change, so check current listings before you buy.
The Recall Backdrop
The timing matters. Kobalt’s USB-charging 24V batteries were recalled this summer over fire and smoking incidents, and a class-action lawsuit followed over how Lowe’s handled it. The recall did not involve the standard packs, but Kobalt’s battery story needed a clean chapter, and TXP is it.
One open question: Lowe’s recent Kobalt launches have traded performance for price, and the company hasn’t announced any new 24V tools that actually use TXP’s higher output. Until new brushless tools appear alongside these packs, TXP is a battery upgrade for the tools you already own. Kobalt’s Gen 3 24V lineup remains the current tool generation.
How It Stacks Up
Ryobi’s EDGE tabless batteries launched at comparable pricing and now top out at 12Ah, so the door is open for Kobalt to scale TXP up. For now, 8Ah is the ceiling. If you’re deep in the Kobalt 24V platform, the 8Ah TXP at $159 undercuts what the old 8Ah Ultimate Output sold for, with better under-load performance.
Kobalt is a Lowe’s exclusive, so TXP batteries are only available there. More details on the new packs are thin, including charge rates and cell sourcing, so check manufacturer specs for anything we haven’t verified here.
