Makita Releases Two 40V XGT Framing Nailers — 1,020 Nails Per Charge, No Compressor Needed

Makita has released two new cordless framing nailers for its 40V max XGT platform, covering both major collation standards used on job sites. The GNB01Z (30° clipped head) and GNB02Z (21° full round head) give XGT users a compressor-free framing option that, according to Makita, drives 1,020 nails on a single 2.5Ah charge.

Two Models, One Platform

Both nailers target the same structural framing applications — floor joists, wall framing, roof decking — but accommodate different jobsite nail preferences. The GNB01Z uses 30° plastic strip nails (collated with the head angled forward), which are common in most rental and commercial framing operations. The GNB02Z uses 21° plastic collated nails with full round heads — the standard in areas where building codes require full-head nails for shear wall sheathing.

Nail range is the same for both models: 2 inches to 3-1/2 inches in length. Shank diameter range differs slightly — GNB01Z handles .113 to .131-inch wire, while GNB02Z goes up to .148-inch for heavier wire nails.

Key Specs

  • Platform: 40V max XGT (20V battery not compatible)
  • Drive power: Up to 1,020 nails per charge (40V XGT 2.5Ah battery — sold separately)
  • Weight: 11.9 lbs with battery
  • GNB01Z magazine capacity: 58 nails
  • GNB02Z magazine capacity: 41 nails
  • Fire modes: Sequential and bump fire (two-mode selector)
  • Depth adjustment: Tool-less
  • Nail length: 2 in. to 3-1/2 in.

How These Stack Up

At 11.9 lbs with battery, both nailers are on par with cordless framing nailers from DeWalt (DCN692B at 9.0 lbs bare tool, slightly lighter) and Milwaukee’s M18 FUEL nailers. The 1,020-nail runtime is competitive — DeWalt’s DCN692 claims up to 700+ nails per charge on a standard 5.0Ah pack. Makita is drawing on the XGT’s 40V architecture, which has a power and capacity advantage over most 18V/20V platforms in sustained heavy use. Check manufacturer specs for verified torque and energy output data.

The XGT platform now covers 170+ tools, but framing nailers were a notable gap until now. For framers already invested in XGT drills, saws, and the GCU08Z chainsaw, adding the GNB01Z or GNB02Z without buying into another battery system is the practical play.

Formwork Accessory

Makita also released a new Framing Nailer Accessory for Formwork alongside these tools — a jig designed for repetitive nail placement in concrete formwork applications. This is a niche add-on for crews doing poured concrete work, not relevant to most residential framers.

Where to Buy

Both the GNB01Z and GNB02Z are available through authorized Makita dealers including Acme Tools, Tool Nut, and ToolUp. Pricing was not officially announced at time of writing — check your local Makita dealer or Amazon for current pricing and availability. Makita distributes through Amazon for most of its cordless lineup.
