If you’ve been waiting to ditch your gas riding mower this spring, the wait is over. Ryobi’s new 80V HP Riding Mowers are now live at Home Depot — the R1 30-inch riding mower and the ZR3 42-inch zero-turn, both announced in January but landing on shelves right as mowing season begins.
R1 80V HP 30-Inch Riding Mower — $2,999
The R1 targets homeowners with up to an acre of lawn. It runs three brushless motors on Ryobi’s 80V HP system — equivalent to a 16-horsepower gas engine according to Ryobi — and cuts up to one full acre on a single charge using the included 80V 14Ah battery. A second battery port is built in for extended runtime when you need it.
- Motors: 3 brushless (3-motor 80V HP system)
- Cutting width: 30 inches
- Runtime: Up to 1 acre per charge
- Kit includes: Mower, one 80V 14Ah battery, charger, mulch plug
- Price: $2,999 at Home Depot
ZR3 80V HP 42-Inch Zero-Turn Mower — $3,999
The ZR3 steps up with four motors, a 42-inch fabricated steel deck, and two 80V 14Ah batteries in the kit. Ryobi rates it at up to two acres per charge and equates the power output to a 25-horsepower gas engine. Deck height adjusts from 1 to 4.5 inches across 15 positions. Stock appears limited right now — the HD listing has an in-stock notification option if your local store is showing unavailable.
- Motors: 4 brushless (equivalent to 25 HP gas)
- Cutting width: 42 inches
- Runtime: Up to 2 acres per charge
- Deck: 12-gauge fabricated steel, 15 height positions (1″–4.5″), quick-release removal
- Kit includes: Mower, two 80V 14Ah batteries, charger
- Price: $3,999 at Home Depot
New 80V 14Ah Battery
Both mowers depend on Ryobi’s new 80V 14Ah battery — the brand’s highest-capacity 80V pack yet, delivering up to 40% more runtime than previous 80V batteries. It’s backward-compatible with the existing 80V outdoor platform, so if you already run an 80V chainsaw or blower, those batteries will work on these mowers too (though runtime will vary).
The Trade-Off Worth Noting
Battery riding mowers aren’t new — EGO and Husqvarna have had them for years — but Ryobi’s pricing and Home Depot distribution puts them directly in front of the DIY crowd. The real question most homeowners will have: reliability over multiple seasons. Battery walk-behind mowers have a solid track record, but riding mowers are more mechanically complex. These are first-generation units on a new platform. Early adopters get the convenience; waiting a season means benefiting from others’ experience.
No gas, no oil changes, no belts. For suburban lots under an acre or two, these make a compelling case.
