Spring is right around the corner, and Ryobi just gave homeowners a compelling reason to ditch the gas can for good. The new Ryobi 40V HP Brushless 21″ AWD Multi-Blade Self-Propelled Mower (RY40HPLM02K2) is now live at Home Depotâand it brings all-wheel drive to a battery-powered walk-behind for the first time.
What Makes the AWD Multi-Blade Mower Different
Ryobi’s existing 40V lineup already covers most suburban yards well, but this new model targets two real pain points: traction on sloped or uneven terrain, and cutting performance on thick turf.
The AWD system powers all four wheels independently, giving you grip and control in situations where the standard single-drive mowers bog downâwet grass, inclines, and patches that throw off momentum. You can toggle AWD on or off from the handle. Paddle shifters help steer around obstacles without the full stop-and-redirect you’d do with a gas mower.
The “multi-blade” deck design uses overlapping blades to eliminate the center strip that single-blade mowers sometimes miss on uneven ground. Combined with the 21″ cut width, you’re getting consistent coverage per pass.
Power and Runtime
The mower runs on two 40V HP batteries. With the included pair of 6.0Ah packs, Ryobi claims up to 70 minutes of runtimeâenough to handle most suburban lots in a single charge. The HP Technology platform is rated to exceed the output of a 170cc gas engine, which puts it in the range of mid-tier gas mowers that cover ½ to ž acre lots.
Operating noise is rated 85% quieter than equivalent gas models. If you’ve got neighbors close by or mow early, that’s a genuine quality-of-life improvement.
Cut Command Center
Ryobi added a new display panel near the handleâcalled the Cut Command Centerâthat shows battery life, blade wear status, and drive settings at a glance. Height adjustment, propulsion speed, and drive mode are all accessible from the same control cluster without stopping to fiddle with levers on the deck.

There’s also a single-battery standard version (RY40HPLM01K2) at approximately $599 if the AWD system isn’t a priority for your yard.
How It Fits Ryobi’s 2026 Outdoor Push
Ryobi has been aggressive with outdoor power in 2026. Earlier this year they announced two new 80V riding mowers and a 14Ah battery platform for larger lotsâincluding a zero-turn at $3,999 for the spring season. The AWD 40V walk-behind fills a different segment: the homeowner with a typical suburban lot who wants the all-weather traction and convenience of AWD without jumping to a riding mower.
If you’re upgrading from a gas mower or an older battery model, the 40V platform has a deep ecosystem of tools. The same batteries work across Ryobi’s full 40V HP lineup, from string trimmers to leaf blowers. That platform investment is part of what makes the switch make sense if you’re running a whole outdoor power setup on one battery system.
