Makita Launches GPH03: Most Powerful XGT Hammer Drill Arrives With $499 Combo Kit

Makita is stacking its 40V XGT platform with serious muscle. Following the recent launch of the GDT04 high-torque impact driver, the company has now formally released the GPH03Z — its most powerful XGT hammer drill — and packaged both tools into a new $499 combo kit.

If you’ve been waiting for a reason to jump onto Makita’s 40V XGT platform, this combination makes a compelling case.

GPH03Z: Makita’s Most Powerful Hammer Drill

The GPH03Z replaces the GPH01Z as the top-spec XGT hammer drill. Key specs:

  • Max torque: 1,590 in-lbs
  • 3-speed transmission: 0-650 / 0-1,800 / 0-2,600 RPM
  • Hammering: 0-9,750 / 0-27,000 / 0-36,000 IPM
  • Electronic digital clutch: 41 settings (low) / 30 settings (mid) / 21 settings (high)
  • Active Feedback-sensing Technology (AFT) — shuts down if accessory binds
  • Extreme Protection Technology (XPT) — improved dust and water resistance
  • Base-mounted LED with wide-field coverage

The electronic digital clutch is a meaningful differentiator from most drills on the market. Rather than a physical clutch ring with numbered settings, it uses motor feedback to hit precise torque targets — a real advantage when driving fasteners into materials where over-driving causes damage: decking, cabinetry, trim work.

At 1,590 in-lbs, the GPH03 delivers more torque than Milwaukee’s M18 FUEL Hammer Drill (1,200 in-lbs) and beats DeWalt’s 20V MAX XR (1,200 in-lbs). The trade-off is platform cost and battery availability — XGT is a more expensive entry point.

The Combo Kit: Two Powerhouses, One Price

The GT202SU1D1 combo kit pairs the GPH03Z with the GDT04Z impact driver — the most powerful impact driver in Makita’s lineup at 2,040 in-lbs of torque with 4 speed modes. The kit includes a 4.0Ah battery, a 2.5Ah battery, charger, and bag for $499.

That’s an aggressive price point for two top-spec 40V tools. A comparable Milwaukee M18 FUEL two-tool combo runs $399–$499 depending on battery configuration — same range, but Milwaukee’s M18 tools offer less torque in this class. For buyers who want maximum output in a two-tool kit, the Makita pairing makes a strong argument.

Who Is This For?

The GPH03 combo is purpose-built for demanding trades work — concrete anchors, structural fastening, heavy framing. If you’re primarily running standard woodworking or light construction, the GPH01 or even 18V LXT tools are plenty. The GPH03 earns its keep when you regularly push a drill hard.

Worth considering: Makita’s XGT platform is still maturing compared to Milwaukee M18 FUEL or DeWalt FLEXVOLT. If you’re evaluating the ecosystem investment, check our full battery platform comparison and our guide to the best pro combo kits of 2026 to see how XGT stacks up.

The GPH03Z bare tool and GPH03SU1 kit are available now through authorized Makita dealers and major retailers.
